 TopGun '97 Win
Magic Cup
TopGun 97 took first place at the Magic Cup Tournament
in Morgan Hill, the weekend of August 28th & 29th.
The U13 ladies
particpated in the Gold Division, winning every game over weekend event. They
went through group play with three 1-0 victories to lead the pack on points and
book a position in the Championship game against Santa Rosa Fury (NorCal
Premier) who had won their bracket after a convincing 5-1 win over the Mustang
Rowdies.
The evenly matched teams exchanged chances in the first half
of the game, but it was the Fury that would hold a 1-0 lead at halftime
following a powerful free kick from 20 yards. They would extend that lead to
2-0 in the second half with 10 minutes remaining in regulation
time.
Things would get interesting with 3 minutes left on the clock when
TopGun scored to cut the Fury lead in half. They would unbelievably score the
equalizer on the last kick of regulation to extend the contest to extra time.
A scoreless overtime would force a shootout to decide the tournament
champion. After going up by a goal, TopGun's goalkeeper Carrie pulled off a
full length dive to stop Fury's final kick to complete an astonishing
comeback.
